Jim Mellon, the billionaire investor-author, has predicted that 50 percent of all the meat consumption by humans on the planet will be plant-based or from cellular agriculture.
Fundamental changes in agriculture and food production are inevitable. Facing the pressure of mitigating the negative environmental impact of traditional agriculture will be a major challenge for the growing population. Biotechnology of cellular products for food and materials has already been produced but the full profits of cellular farming have only recently begun to accrue. Cultured meat is a promising technology for animal-based proteins but still needs further development. The concept of plant cells is a very attractive option for obtaining healthy, protein rich and nutritious balanced food raw materials. Furthermore, cultured microorganisms can be processed in a wide range of biosynthesis materials. It will be important to have better control over the structural properties in all cultured cell applications.
