Google has said that it is developing an alternative to Fitzpatrick Skin Type (FST), the industry-standard method for classifying skin tones, which many technology researchers and dermatologists say is inadequate for assessing whether products are biased against people of colour.
Alphabet's Google told Reuters this week that it was developing an industry-standard approach to classifying skin tones, with a growing group of technology researchers and dermatologists saying the products are not suitable for people of color.This is a six-color scale known as the Fitzpatrick skin type (FST), which dermatologists have been using since 1S0. Tech companies now rely on it to categorize people and measure whether products like facial recognition systems or smartwatch heart-rate sensors work in skin tone.
Critics say the FST ignores the four types of "white types" of skin and the diversity of people in the "black" and "brown" colors. The Department of Homeland Security recommended dropping the FST last October to assess facial recognition. Colors do not represent a range of populations.
