Launching Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate

Launching Agriculture Innovation Mission for Climate

On November 2, at the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26), the United States and the United Arab Emirates officially launched the Climate Innovation Mission (AIM for Climate) with 31 countries and more than 48 non-governmental partners. In remarks at the World Leaders Summit, President Biden announced that the United States intends to raise $ 1 billion in climate-smart farming and food system innovation over five years (2021-2025). This announcement represents the highest level of public commitment by the United States to date and the first commitment made by any U.S. federal agency. It is also co-chairing the United Nations Secretary-General's Global Investment Fund for Climate-Smart Agriculture and Food Systems (GICFSAF), established with US \ 60 million from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). To accumulate $ 1.5 billion annually by 2030. These funds will be matched by a total of 1.9 billion from public and private sources. US \ 60 million from the United States will allow GICFSAF to invest in small, new and scalable businesses.

AIM for Climate is led by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and supported by the White House, the State Department, USAID, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). Its main objectives are to adopt climate-smart farming and food systems and to stimulate climate-smart economic growth. In 2020, the United States will host AIM for Climate’s Global Executive Summit, bringing together about 400 business and government leaders from more than 40 countries to discuss and develop best practices and frameworks for implementing climate-smart agriculture and food systems. Focus on scaling-up. US \ $ 1 billion will be matched by private and public partners to fund AIM for climate in developing countries, and the funding is in addition to the support already pledged.

In parallel, the U.S. government has announced a \ 10 million USAID Climate Resilient Development Program administered by the World Agriculture Fund and focused on scaling-up climate-smart farming and food systems. The funds will be directed to GICFSAF and AIM for Climate, a significant portion of which will be allocated to the Global Research Alliance on Agricultural Greenhouse Gases (GRA), with an initial distribution of 3.5 million. GRA was launched in January 2018 with the aim of developing and deploying improved agricultural practices, market interventions, technology and climate measures such as data and education.

An important part of AIM for Climate and GRA's strategy is to increase the impact of the Nutrition and Climate for Agriculture (A4NC) program, which currently operates in 32 countries. The program was launched in 2013 as a multi-donor-led response to the critical problem of micro-nutrient malnutrition and aims to increase market access, improve practices and enable it to adapt to climate change. The A4NC program has been extremely successful in contributing to achieving MDG targets 1, 4, 5, 6 and 8 and has recently been extended to 2020. Currently, the total amount allocated to A4NC in 33 countries is 9 million, of which USAID is the major financier, with a total grant of more than 6 5.6 million.
