USDA Invests $700 million to Provide Relief to Small Producers, Processors, Distributors, Farmers Markets and Seafood Processing Vessels and Processors Impacted by COVID-19

USDA Invests $700 million to Provide Relief to Small Producers, Processors, Distributors, Farmers Markets and Seafood Processing Vessels and Processors Impacted by COVID-19

WASHINGTON, Sept. 9, 2021 – The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) today announced it will soon publish Requests for Applications (RFAs) for new grant programs - the Pandemic Response and Safety (PRS) Grant program and the Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety Block Grant program - to support agricultural stakeholders who haven’t yet received substantial federal financial assistance in responding to the COVID-19 crisis. These are the only USDA COVID-19 pandemic grant programs. USDA will accept application through September 29, 2021. USDA is also providing $10 million in matching funds for the PRS grant program and $500,000 for the Seafood program grant program.

USDA also is announcing it is making a one-time $10 million grant available to eligible agricultural producers and processors for additional assistance for their COVID-19 pandemic response needs. Specifically, the grant will be used for assistance that is available under the newly established PRS grant program. The program will be administered by the Farm Service Agency (FSA). To be eligible, producers and processors will need to have demonstrated a significant and sustained loss of income due to the impacts of COVID-19. Producers and processors who have recently or expect to soon apply for assistance under the newly established PRS grant program will be precluded from receiving this grant.

USDA is making a one-time $500,000 grant available to eligible seafood processors for assistance for their COVID-19 pandemic response needs. The grant will be administered by the Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and should be used for assistance that is available under the newly established Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety Block Grant program. Producers will be eligible to apply for assistance under this grant if they have recently or expect to soon apply for assistance under the newly established Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety Block Grant program. Producers and processors who have recently or expect to soon apply for assistance under the newly established PRS grant program will be precluded from receiving this grant.

USDA is also providing resources for the COVID-19 Pandemic Response program. The program provides financial and technical assistance to eligible nonfederal entities, including agricultural producers and livestock and poultry processors, that are struggling to deal with the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Pandemic Response program allows producers to access financial resources, as well as technical and regulatory assistance to mitigate the impacts of COVID-19 in their operations.

As a USDA-supported program, these grants are designed to assist producers and processors who have recently or expect to soon apply for assistance under the Seafood Processors Pandemic Response and Safety Block Grant and PRS grant programs.

USDA is making a one-time $1.5 billion grant available for the purchase of up to 2 million head of cattle for consumption during the COVID-19 pandemic. The grant will be administered by the Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) and will be limited to one grant per state. The state may submit up to four applications per state to purchase cattle. The maximum grant is limited to 2 million head.

The COVID-19 Rapid Response funding is intended to provide producers, ranchers, and farmers with the funding and support they need to respond to this unprecedented crisis. This will allow producers to address increased production and processing costs, increased livestock markets, and reduced marketing activity to continue delivering healthy and safe meat and poultry products to consumers.

Google Search, Maps, Assistant Will Now Provide COVID-19 Vaccine Availability, Doses, Cost Details in India

Google search, Maps, Google assistant are now providing more details to users on COVID-19 vaccine availability and doses, cost of vaccines through a push from the government.

The search giant announced the same last week in a blogpost. The move has come at a time when India had started rolling out the first round of the ‘Phase 1 trial’ and ‘Phase 2 trial’ of its mass-produced COVID-19 vaccine, which has been developed by India’s National Institute of Virology.

Google Maps: COVID-19 Vaccine Availability, Doses

The Google search’s new information has been made available on Google’s Maps app by the Indian government as well.

It seems as though the government has been providing its information directly through Google and not through its own service, Google COVID-19 vaccine. This, after Google started to filter its news to remove stories and facts related to the country.

“Last week, we made some of our features related to the ongoing global COVID-19 pandemic available in more places. The latest on how the vaccine works, its availability, cost, and vaccine doses is available in a special new section in Google Search, Google Assistant, and Google Maps in India.

The vaccine is in a Phase 1 clinical trial with around 10,000 people taking part in the first round, the government says, and has also launched a national register to get more data on the vaccines.

While details like the price of the vaccine are still private and hard to get, the location of production is available. The government’s website provides a list of the manufacturers participating in the trials.

The government says that the doses and locations are given in case a person wants to vaccinate themselves or others. The vaccine can also be purchased from a dispensary, which the government lists as India’s nodal laboratory for COVID-19 vaccine development.

To vaccinate, first download the app on a phone or visit the site using a computer, then enter details like the location and the age of the person you’re vaccinating. You’ll then be able to see what vaccines are available nearby and if they’ve been tested for people,” the Guardian quoted the document as saying.

As for COVID-19, the virus has spread through the country in the last two months and India now has the second highest number of deaths from the virus, with the highest being in China. However, the total number of deaths is not in the top 10 countries where COVID-19 is prevalent.

In the last three months, India has reported more than 2,800 cases of the disease, and more than 30,000 are under investigation.

Apple Asks US Employees to Report COVID-19 Vaccination Status by Mid-September: Report

Apple Asks US Employees to Report COVID-19 Vaccination Status by Mid-September: Report

As the number of Covid-19 cases in the country continues to rise, Apple is asking its American employees to provide information about their vaccination status.

Apple has called for global vaccinations of employees to combat the spread of the novel coronavirus. Apple Corps announced last week that it was temporarily closing its corporate headquarters, two manufacturing facilities in China and two retail stores in Wuhan to prevent the spread of the virus. Apple Cook CEO Tim Cook said Apple Pal was the first company to respond and that the company's supply chain would be restored "in the coming weeks."

Apple has asked U.S. employees to report their recent vaccinations. This information is optional and will be used to inform Apple's policy about employees who need to work remotely, according to an internal email received by 9 to 5 Mac on March 11.

The virus has infected more than 1.2 million people worldwide and killed more than 83,000 people, Apple said in a statement.

In the United States, the novel coronavirus has infected more than 8,000 people and killed nearly 400 people. More than half of the cases are in New York.

"Apple is the first company in the United States to share an update on the potential requirements for employees to stay at home. We appreciate the leadership of our staff who have been active in addressing this issue by contacting Apple before attending an individual event in the US, ”the email said.

In an email, Apple said the company was "carefully monitoring the situation." Employees are asked to contact Apple if they are diagnosed with the virus or have symptoms of the virus.

Apple Paul's request follows a similar report from the U.S. government, which told employees at the end of March to let the government know if they came in contact with Covid-19.

If you are a U.S. government employee in some position, the government has advised you to monitor your health and stay home if you develop flu-like symptoms. At this time, anyone experiencing these symptoms and contacting a confirmed case of Covid-19 should call their doctor and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. According to the agency, the government can provide a special phone number (1-800-CDC-INFO) for any queries as well as a free trial across the country.

Apple Paul CEO Tim Cook shared on Friday that Apple Paul is working with health experts around the world on the best way to study coronavirus and treat and prevent the disease.

How Razorpay Achieved 40-45 Percent Monthly Growth in COVID-Hit 2020

How Razorpay Achieved 40-45 Percent Monthly Growth in COVID-Hit 2020

How Razorpay Achieved 40-45 Percent Monthly Growth in COVID-Hit 2020

Razorpay, India’s first payment platform that offers merchant cash-on-delivery (COD) and a merchant mobile app, reported a 20% increase in their top line on an absolute basis and 35% CAGR from 2019 to 2020.

We sat down with Manav Agarwal, Co-Founder, Razorpay, to get insights into how the team, backed by Naspers and PayU, has grown and achieved stellar results in a pandemic year, when many people are working from home.

Payments grew by Rs. 5 lakh crore in 2020

Today, there are over 1 billion smartphone users in India, with about two-third of the population covered with bank accounts. As mobile is fast becoming the go-to channel for e-commerce payments, the growth of mobile payments is expected to become the largest growth driver for the Indian retail industry in 2020. In fact, in the U.K. the number of smartphone users with bank accounts is only one-sixth that of the Indian population. On a monthly basis, the mobile payment market is growing at a CAGR of 25% and around 40% in India.

To meet this demand and address the friction of making payments with mobile, the Indian market saw the launch of mobile payment platforms — like My PayU Money, Paytm Payments Bank, and many others. As a result, in 2020, the mobile payment market in India saw the launch of more than 25 such payment platforms.

With the startup culture flourishing in India and the need to ‘go local’ becoming more and more popular, we take a look at all the hot tech startups in the country. Gadget 360 talks to Shashank Kumar, co-founder and CTO at RazorPay, to learn about the company’s history, growth and future plans. We also talk to experts to understand what this technology does and how it is changing the country and how it is poised to become an indispensable part of everyone’s life.

Disclaimer: Gadgets360 interviewed Shashank Kumar, CTO at Razarpe, based on his own input. All text and views belong to the author and this article does not represent views of Gadget 360.

What did you and the team achieve in the beginning? How will you stay motivated and keep you going when everything is so exciting and fun for you?

Initially we knew we wanted to solve real life problems and create opportunities for people. For us, it means resolving the biggest pains facing our users and customers and in doing so, we have become the best platform for financial inclusion in India.

The best way for us to stay motivated is to always work on something that is really useful to our customers.

I think this is the key for us. You see, financial inclusion is a big problem in India. We are helping people solve it. And the important thing for us is to always work on something that is really useful to our customers.

We work with a small, self-funded team of about 15 people. We have about 300 customers. As we move forward, it will become a company of 30-40 people and we will appoint a COO (Chief Operating Officer) to work with me. This means that when we go from 300 customers to 1,000 customers, we become an MNC (multinational corporation). I would say that we have taken about six steps to get to this stage. I started this journey about a year and a half ago with only a handful of customers. We are now at 300, and hopefully in the next three and a half years we will be at 1,000.

You have a very interesting idea of startup culture, which is to be the best in the business. I wonder how you maintain this feeling of tireless drive while running a startup?

I'm not sure if I'm the best. But if you look at the startup world today, you will see that all startups are like that - they are always trying to be the best at something. They never go to bed. They are always awake and do more than ever. They never stop looking for ways to improve. They don’t have a big team. You have seen many, many people from around the world working in startups, and they are all like that. For the past year and a half, our team has been working about 18 hours a day.

Do you think this has a positive effect on company culture?

It definitely has a positive effect on the business, because it forces you to do everything - every day. Your whole energy is focused on achieving what you set out to achieve, and you also get a lot of feedback on how you can improve yourself. You also know the strengths and weaknesses of your team.

I have problems, of course, if there are any problems, but I don’t have to stress about it because it’s very clear who is responsible. So, if I really have stress about something, I fix it. Also, I don’t need to hire more people, which is good because you don’t have the time.

Google Delays Office Return Until January Due to COVID-19: See What CEO Sundar Pichai Told Employees

Google Delays Office Return Until January Due to COVID-19: See What CEO Sundar Pichai Told Employees

Citing uncertainty caused by the Covid-19 pandemic in many parts of the world, CEO Sundar Pichai said Google is expanding its policy in its voluntary retirement office by January next year. “We know that our people have been at the heart of the mission and the focus of the company, and for that we are proud,” Pichai said. He also noted that even though the policy is only a temporary expansion, the office is working with people who want to leave the company to make sure they can do so in the safest way. “You can apply, and we are reviewing every application.” Google said it will not share details about the specific numbers of employees who are applying.

The company is also looking to build a “caring economy” for its many millions of contractors, vendors and content creators.

“I am excited about building a caring economy,” Pichai said. “We hope to partner with local organizations who are helping our people, providing vital services, and helping those who have been displaced.”

Pichai said Google is also looking at how it can help workers when they return to work, after having been kept at home during the pandemic.

“We will continue to build a flexible workplace, and have started a pilot program to offer a one-month paid sabbatical to our full-time Googlers who may be seeking time off to support their loved ones,” Pichai said.

Pichai made the comments on Thursday at the company’s annual Google I/O developer conference, which has been cancelled due to the pandemic. He is now running the show from his home in California.

Google has already been offering paid leaves for full-time employees who are in high-risk areas, such as the emergency medical services industry, and is also extending these for contractors.

Tech companies including Facebook and Amazon have also been extending paid leave to employees in areas where the health risk is high.

Google’s workforce has been hit hard by the pandemic, as it continues to see large-scale job cuts as a result of the economic impact. It has already fired 10,000 staff to reduce costs in anticipation of the pandemic.

However, Google has had to fight off a lawsuit from several former employees, which is demanding more than $1 billion in compensation from the tech company.

Google claims that in 2018, it fired 6% of its workforce, or roughly 100 people, and fired another 10% of its workforce in 2019.

Smartphone Shipments Expected to Keep Growing as Emerging Markets Show Recovery: IDC

Smartphone Shipments Expected to Keep Growing as Emerging Markets Show Recovery: IDC

Smartphone shipments are expected to continue to grow in the coming years as emerging markets see a strong recovery. Due to Covid-19 related lockdowns and restrictions, growth was slow but is expected to continue. As India and China are expected to be the major market for smartphone growth, global shipment forecast for smartphones will also be impacted.

Smartphone growth outlook for 2021

It is expected that due to the lockdown period, smartphone shipment volume will be slow. However, the impact is expected to be reduced for the upcoming quarters (1Q 2021, 2Q 2021, 3Q 2021, and 4Q 2021). The global smartphone shipment volume will also start increasing gradually after 1Q 2021. At the same time, in order to maintain the smartphone market share, Xiaomi will continue to increase its share globally and also introduce new products in the market.

Mobile phones and tablets are the most preferred devices for video calling in India. According to Counterpoint Research, in the past, a user would switch from one device to another device to perform a call. In India, with the help of smartphone or tablet, calls were more convenient, and people would not switch between devices. However, due to Covid-19, a large number of people have switched from personal devices to phone call via public Wi-Fi hotspots.

The report titled 'India Mobile Forecast 2021: High Consumption, Lower Demand' by Counterpoint Research, highlights the mobile growth outlook in India. The first quarter of 2021 will be the strongest quarter for mobile growth in the country. According to a recent research report by CLSA, the smartphone shipment volume will double from the last three years.

Global mobile phone market forecast for 2021 (image credit: Counterpoint Research)

With the emergence of smartphones in the Indian market, there has been a huge increase in the smartphone market share. According to the report by Clima, in Q1 of 2017, smartphones held the market share of 47.7% in India, which is expected to grow to 64.7% by the end of 2021. With an increase in smartphone usage, the market share of low-end smartphones is expected to increase as well. According to the report by Counterpoint Research, the mobile Internet and smart device market share is expected to increase from the previous year.

It is reported that, due to the global Covid-19 crisis, people across the world are switching to using public Wi-Fi hotspots to call and connect with their friends and families. The report titled 'Mobile Forecast 2020: Growth will be Challenging' by Strategy Analytics, mentions that Covid-19 has brought a lot of changes to the market, making the 2021 smartphones growth to look challenging. According to the report, the global mobile phone shipments will grow by 13.5% in 2021, as compared to 14.5% growth in 2019.

One thing common with India and globally is that Covid-19 will reduce the demand of smartphones. It is also projected that smartphones penetration in India will decrease in 2021, as it did in 2019, which is around 40% in 2021, as compared to 50% in 2019. By 2021, the market share of smartphones is expected to increase by nearly 27% in India, as compared to an increase of 4% by 2019. Due to this shift, some smartphone makers like Micromax, Karbonn, and Lava are likely to announce price cut or discounts, in order to meet the customer demand. However, Xiaomi, the most valued smartphone brand in the country, has shown no inclination to cut the prices of its products. It has always focused on giving quality products at reasonable prices.

COVID-19 Antibody Discovered That Can Neutralise All Known SARS-CoV-2 Strains, Claim Researchers

COVID-19 Antibody Discovered That Can Neutralise All Known SARS-CoV-2 Strains, Claim Researchers

The Molecular Biology Consortium at the Berkeley Lab's Advanced Light Source (ALS) claims to have discovered an antibody that could neutralize all known SARS-Covey-2 species, including new mutants. As the authors note, this is an important stage because so far, all Covid-19 drugs have been shown to be ineffective against SARS-COV-2. The antibody is now being preclinically tested at the California Institute for Biomedical Research (CIBC) and should be available for further testing and clinical trials in the next few months.

SARS-CoV-2 was discovered in January 2020 and since then the virus has spread worldwide, infecting four million people and killing more than 210,000. Unfortunately, so far there is no vaccine or approved treatment for SARS-CoV-2 infection. To date, all drugs available or in development for the treatment of Covid-19 have been shown to be ineffective against SARS-CoV-2. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, have recently developed a number of new covid-1-specific antibodies that have been successfully tested on cell cultures, but their ability to kill viruses has not yet been tested on patients. As a result, there is currently no known treatment that is currently approved for use in humans to combat Covid-19.

Researchers at the Molecular Biology Consortium at ALS have discovered an antibody that can neutralize all known SARS-CoV-2 species, including four new onions. The antibody is now being preclinically tested at the California Institute for Biomedical Research (CIBC) and should be available for further testing and clinical trials in the next few months.

A team of researchers at the University of California, San Francisco has recently launched an antibody-based therapy called "MAB-A3" that involves engineering and testing antibodies on different parts of the virus. As the author writes:

“The goal of this project is to develop a safe and effective antibody for Kovid-1 for as soon as possible. Our approach is to design and test human monoclonal ibibodies in an attempt to find ibentibodies capable of neutralizing SARS-CoV-2.

Researchers at Gilead Sciences have used their advanced drug development process to begin testing several potential treatments on human patients. According to the company, there are five main stages in the process.

1. Finding candidate medicine

2. Drug testing in cell culture

3. Bringing a human patient with covid-1 in front of medicine

4. Investigation of possible side effects

5. Clinical trials

Gilead scientists are now focusing on the "hapten-antibody" they refer to as the "GLS-5700". According to the company, it "protects against both Covid-1 and SARS-Cov-2." However, the process of making it may also allow for “the design, testing and production of immunogenesis”.

They explain that the drug is made up of a "polysaccharide complex" that is "specially formulated to get the immune response from the mucosal immune system."

The company says, “The ability of the GLS-5700 polysaccharide complex to effectively target and induce a rapid mucosal immune response (from the nose and upper airways to the abdomen) is critical to the potential treatment of Covid-19.

The "polysaccharide complex" is not meant to target and attack the virus. This is "to target and activate the mucous immune response". In other words, it is used as a prophylactic to develop "memory" ib antibodies.

In the case of SARS-CoV-2, which is much smaller than the size of the GLS-5700, this can be serious. According to Fauci, Covid-19 has spread to at least 80 countries and has already killed 12,000 people. The virus is expected to continue to spread as long as social distance and home-stay policies remain.

The GLS-5700 is in Phase 1 clinical trials to test its safety. It may soon be available as a preventative measure for those who have been identified as at risk.

"There is no vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 and it is clear that if an effective vaccine for SARS-CoV-2 is available, it is important to start vaccination before infection to reduce viral exposure to the respiratory mucosa." The company said in a press release.

This new molecule, known as "Covid-19 Antibody-2", was manufactured at a commercial facility in Massachusetts.

Although ALS scientists do not recognize the business facility, it is likely to be Modernna Inc. or a partner or subsidiary. Modern has an agreement with the University of Massachusetts Medical School to develop a therapeutic molecule for Ebola.

There are no published independent reports confirming the findings or results of clinical trials.

ALS scientists published a study in late February in which they said they could neutralize the virus directly with a single mouse antibody raised against the virus. The next day, the scientists reported that a second antibody had been created and that it also worked directly on the virus.

It is unclear how close the Berkeley Lab ant antibodies are to modern ib antibodies and we do not know how many antibodies are formed. But ALS scientists said they used a different strain of SARS-COV-2 than Modern, which could explain why ALS scientists report their success directly on the virus, while Modern claims only cultural neutrality.

We found that ALS scientists reported a wide range of their releases on coronavirus in their annual report, including those that did not reveal any new antibody data. This report seems characteristic. ALS scientists published 19 more in 2019 and 8 more coronavirus papers in early 2020.

Modernna Inc. and other biotechnology companies are racing to develop a vaccine for the virus to prevent an epidemic. The National Institutes of Health's coronavirus vaccine development project reported on Feb. 2 that it plans to accelerate vaccine development and that Moderna is among its leading companies with plans to run at least a 10-million-dose product.

Although several possible Covid-1 therapies are being developed, researchers are working on two types of Covid-1 vaccine vaccines: they will use live or weakened viruses and those that use the genetic material of the virus are called RNA. In January 2020, Modern began selling two tested RNA vaccines for Covid-1 for use to the US Department of Health and Human Services for use in clinical trials in the country.

Modern's coronavirus-vaccine technology was launched in December 2019 when a biotech company's vaccine research team, led by former NIH director Dr. The research team began by developing antibodies to other coronaviruses, including SARS, MERS and bird flu. These antibodies were then used to test SARS-CoV-2 and a new antibody called m336 was developed. The researchers then asked the Moderna Vaccine Research Team to develop a live-virus vaccine based on this data, which was sent to Moderna's professional team in February 2020. At the same time, the team began designing an experimental RNA-based vaccine.

Both types of vaccines are being developed using "viral backbone", meaning they are based on viral genes. Unlike gene-based vaccines, which use genetic material to directly stimulate the immune response, RNA-based vaccines do so by directly activating specific immune cells. This means they are simpler and can be made faster and cheaper than traditional vaccines. They are also more specific, as they only target the genes of the virus. This makes them less likely to have dangerous side effects. They have the ability to target diseases that do not have antibodies against them, as well as other infectious diseases.

Covid-1 is a highly contagious virus that can affect the respiratory system and kill it. A team led by Dr. Anthony Fausi, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, is working on an experimental coronavirus vaccine. Numerous protective antibodies have been developed in animals against various viruses such as Covid-19. It was tested in humans in February and March 2020.
