COVID-19 Misinformation at US Public Forums Vexes Social Media Platforms, Big Tech

Videos of local government meetings have emerged as the latest vector of misinformation about Covid-1mis, spreading misleading claims about masks and vaccines to millions of people and creating new challenges for Internet platforms trying to balance potential harm against the need for government openness.

While state and local government videos present potentially privacy risks, including potentially sensitive information such as license plate numbers, more disturbing footage of government meetings in New York City appears to be being handled by residents trying to get answers from elected officials about how the epidemic unfolds. In one video, an elderly woman with a serious facial ailment approaches a lecturer to read the names of members of the state senate who came in contact with Kovid-19. At other times, the footage is just raw - the microphone is directed to the open mic, where politicians can be heard repeating debunked claims.

Local governments have not been spared from the misinformation and confusion that dominates the national and international news coverage of Kovid-1 of. On March 12, a video of the Los Angeles City Council meeting surfaced featuring a council member who was shown on local news channels that electricity could be treated on the coronavirus. After Los Angeles city officials criticized the council member, an online video surfaced where he was again seen claiming on his social media page. On March 24, the City of Los Angeles released a statement stating that the council member's statement "did not reflect city policy and no decision was made."

"Every day, our ability to obtain truthful information is under attack," said Lavinia Limon, executive director of the Internet Web Archive, which compiles a wealth of government web content, in a statement. “The Internet Archive is working with local and federal governments to preserve and compile their Covid-1 work records. In addition, we are working to reduce losses by providing transparency in the nature and origin of misinformation that occurs to our users. ”

The video has gone viral online from a handful of governments, and the popularity of the video is a testament to how many local governments' communication infrastructure has been eroded and how difficult it is for local authorities to get timely information.

This is a developing story and will be updated.

Disclosure: The Internet Archive is a non-profit that develops programs to facilitate the web.
