Steam Deck Handheld Gaming PC Announced by Valve to Compete With Nintendo Switch

Steam Deck has been announced as a new portable handheld gaming PC that brings the vast library of Steam to a Nintendo Switch like form factor. It is offered in three storage options and will go on sale starting December this year.

Steam Deck, the Switch portable gaming PC, is a compact PC that can be stored on a tabletop, in your backpack, or mounted on your wall. It will launch as three models: one with an internal hard disk, another with a solid state drive (SSD), and the last with a hybrid drive. The base model includes 8 GB of storage and a quad-core AMD Ryzen 5 1400 CPU with integrated Radeon Vega M graphics and comes with a 5-inch touchscreen display with an 1136×640 resolution.

The top of the line version includes 32 GB of storage and a quad-core Ryzen 5 2600 CPU with integrated Radeon Vega M graphics, along with two screens. This PC uses two 7.3-inch OLED touchscreens that offer a 2560×1440 resolution and both panels can be used for playing content. The hybrid version will be a little larger, weighing in at around 5 pounds, and will use a dual-SSD setup. The final version will combine the size of the larger version with the high-end specs, but without the two separate displays. It will feature 32 GB of storage and a hexacore Ryzen 7 2700 CPU with integrated Radeon RX Vega M graphics. It’s expected to weigh in at around 6 pounds and come with two 7.3-inch touchscreens with a resolution of 1440×1620.

The new Steam Deck PC features a design that is similar to the Nintendo Switch. The two 7.3-inch screens are vertically mounted and can be used to display content at different resolutions. Each screen has a touchscreen, an LED backlight, and a speaker. The CPU is a quad-core, eight-thread Ryzen 5 2600 with integrated Radeon Vega M graphics. This is the same hardware configuration as the Nintendo Switch. The memory configuration is a combination of DDR4 and a built-in cache. There’s one storage configuration, which will be available in three capacities: 128 GB, 256 GB, or 512 GB. It’s powered by a 120 W power supply that is shared with the two external monitors.

The Steam Deck PC is expected to retail at a starting price of $750. It is set to launch in Q2 of 2020. A hybrid version of the Steam Deck will also be available. It will be available in a smaller 8-inch version that has two 4.3-inch screens that can be used in a wide variety of configurations, including gaming, VR, and content viewing.

There are currently no plans to release the Steam Deck as a standalone, consumer-focused product. Instead, Valve is looking to partner with OEMs for production of the device.

The original version of the Steam Deck was announced last year. It will only be available for purchase by Valve’s own employees. The Steam Deck is a console-like product that provides Steam gaming capabilities on the go. It offers high-end specifications including a custom designed aluminum chassis, and a high-end cooling solution. The original version came in two sizes: 13.9-inch and 15.6-inch. It offered the same specifications as a MacBook Pro.

There are currently no plans to release Steam Deck as a standalone, consumer-focused product. Instead, Valve is looking to partner with OEMs for production of the device.

With this new iteration of the Steam Deck, it has been designed to provide a smaller, more portable experience. It also allows a broader range of use cases as it supports not only gaming, but also content viewing, productivity, and more.

The smaller design has also allowed Valve to lower the price to $799 (in USD), down from the $1,099 (in USD) for the original.

Pricing for the 8-inch Steam Deck is not yet available, but is expected to be similar to the 7-inch model, with a US$799 (in USD) starting price. A model featuring a 4K display and other premium specifications are also expected to be available for a higher price point.
