Doodle Champion Island is a big hit among the doodlers out there. It is available in English and in Japanese and Chinese versions of Google Play. In its first three days on the Google Play Store, the game had received over 3.3 million downloads. Google also had other Doodle Olympics surprises. It will unveil new art challenges on the Tokyo Olympics Day, and there will also be online live streams where viewers can help choose an Olympic mascot. Google Japan president Nana Mizuki told The Nikkei on August 13 that she expects to receive over 20 million entries and that the company will be able to narrow them down to the top three. “We’ve been surprised by how people want to participate and we want to make it a fun experience,” she said. The company has spent two years preparing the game, according to a Nikkei report. Tokyo Olympics 2020: All Games

This year’s games will be held in Tokyo from 24 July to 9 August. They will be the first since the city was hit by a record-breaking earthquake in March 2011. A few weeks later, they were hit by a tsunami that caused catastrophic damage, and the games are being held in a newly rebuilt, decontaminated, venue. The organizing committee says the games will showcase the rebirth of Tokyo. The games will feature more than 2,000 athletes from 211 countries, plus a new, 3D-rendered Olympic stadium. The event is expected to generate about ¥3.6tn ($30bn) in economic impact. The first Olympic ceremonies will be held on 24 July. The games will be broadcast live on television in more than 170 countries and in more than 90% of Japanese homes. Coverage in Japan will be provided by TV Tokyo, the country’s public broadcaster. The official results will be announced on 20 September, and athletes will compete for gold medals for Japan, Great Britain, and the United States.

A joint ceremony to officially unveil the results of the 2012 games will be held on 20 September in Tokyo. The games were moved from Athens in Greece, because of the ongoing Greek financial crisis. The Summer Olympics were held in a country that is economically strapped and deeply in debt, as Greece is in the throes of an economic crisis. The Olympic village, which has more than 1,100 beds, houses some 3,000 people during the games. And Greece has struggled to pay its debts. On 17 June the Greek government officially asked its creditors for a writedown of at least 60 billion euros. If they reject the request, then Athens will have to default on payments to its creditors, thereby putting Greece’s continued membership of the eurozone in jeopardy. More than two years after the last winter Olympic Games, Russian ice hockey star Evgeni Malkin has been ruled out of the upcoming Olympics in London because of injury. He broke his foot when he crashed into the boards. Malkin, who also plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, was injured in Russia’s 6-2 victory over Denmark on 9 May. The 27-year-old, who also won a gold medal with his country at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, had to be helped off the ice and did not return to action. The Russian hockey federation said on its website that the player had undergone surgery in Moscow on 13 May, but did not specify the nature of the injury or the injury’s severity. The team said it was “disappointed” about Malkin’s injury, adding that it expected him to recover in time to play at the London Games. Russia is sending a team of 60 skaters and 22 goaltenders to London, making it one of the biggest teams ever to compete in the event. A U.S. gold-medal favourite, the Russian team lost 5-4 to Slovakia in the quarter-finals of the world championships in Turin in 2006. The team, which also includes a women’s team, will open the Olympics on 10 August. He broke his foot when he crashed into the boards. Malkin, who also plays for the Pittsburgh Penguins in the NHL, was injured in Russia’s 6-2 victory over Denmark on 9 May. The 27-year-old, who also won a gold medal with his country at the 2006 and 2010 Winter Olympics, had to be stretchered off the ice after crashing into the boards with the bottom of his right foot. However, it has emerged that Malkin has torn a ligament in his right foot, which will keep him out of action until at least the end of the regular season, with no timetable given for his return. Russia has not been affected by the international controversy over the doping of the country’s athletes and its sports leaders are eager to use the Olympics to help change perceptions of the country. The IOC has cleared Russia to host the Winter Olympics, but they have been banned from the 2014 FIFA World Cup because of state-sponsored doping at the Sochi Olympics. Russia’s Ice Hockey Federation president, Alexander Khabbush, said the team is prepared to go without its star player. “If he is not playing because of the Olympics, then we have a plan,” Khabbush told Interfax. A statement from Khabbush said that “as long as there is no clear information that a player will be injured or not, this situation will not change.” Meanwhile, Sergei Khorkin has been confirmed as the team’s new coach. Khorkin, who has experience in ice hockey coaching, is an assistant coach with the national team. He is the head coach of the HC Spartak Moscow U-20 team.
