Google Algorithm Turned This Zurich Engineer Into an Infamous Serial Killer 'The Sadist'

Google search algorithms mistakenly identified engineer Zurich engineer Hristo Georgiev as a Bulgarian serial killer who became infamous in the 80s as The Sadist. Hristo Georgiev is not the same person, Hristo Georgiev of Bulgarian descent is a software engineer, known by his nickname in the world of software development, Hristo (Христо) but Hristo from Bulgaria was never given the name Hristo The Sadist or anything like that.

I wrote about this story because it is one of the most strange things I have ever seen and it was the first case of how search engines can have such a wide reaching effect, not just on the person(s) affected but also on the entire surrounding community.

The case made headlines in the beginning of this year and since then has seen various articles published about it. I came across the blog post The Sadist in Bulgaria at a time when I had other tasks at hand, I thought this story was really interesting and wanted to know more so I decided to dig deeper into the topic.

Here is what I found out:

The Sadist case had a significant impact in Bulgaria and in a lot of countries, especially in the south-eastern countries of the Balkans. At the same time The Sadist case was an extreme example, it was one of the rare cases of an actual criminal, the man behind it was charged for a lot of crimes including sexual violence on minors, harassment and other crimes.

I started to research about the people involved in this case but the web is filled with a lot of information, I am not an expert and am only summarising the news articles I came across, if you have time to dig deeper into this case I would be really interested in what you find out and if you know any additional links I would be glad to read them.
