The Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee unanimously passed a bill that would ban U.S. federal workers from downloading popular government tickets on U.S. government devices.
The bill, introduced by Virginia Republican James Lankford, calls on federal workers to be able to "opt out" from a Chinese-owned app to ensure the privacy of their data.
"We know that this new and fast-growing Chinese company [TickTock] has real cybersecurity concerns and it is not in the interest of the American people that it or any other foreign company be allowed unrestricted access to our data." Hill.
Known in China as Dowin, the app has gained popularity among young people around the world, allowing users to take a lip-syncing video of themselves in music. In the U.S., it was recently banned in Florida schools for fear of coronavirus, as it relates to a recent video containing the virus.
According to Lankford, the massive increase in ticks in the United States has given federal agencies "zero privacy protection" that could make them vulnerable to attacks.
TickTock users are often required to share their "favorite" music videos with the app's algorithm, which then recommends similar videos to the user. Because it is owned by the Chinese government, Lankford said TickTock has direct access to users' information and its business model makes them vulnerable to malicious activity.
The Senate bill, which has not yet been voted on, must be used to prevent all federal workers from being hacked with Department of Defense-certified encryption. And if they choose, they can "deselect" from the app.
TickTock has more than 50 million users in the United States, the majority of whom are under 25 years of age. Due to its popularity in demographics, security experts are urging parents to teach their children "knowledgeable Internet users."
