Google, Facebook, WhatsApp Said to Have Shared Compliance Details With IT Ministry; Twitter Still Hasn’t

Google, Facebook and WhatsApp have shared details with the Ministry of Information Technology about the requirements for the new digital rules, but Twitter has not yet complied with the rules, government sources said. 2021/05/29: This is the first attempt to track the online activities of citizens of India, so that if anyone does something wrong, action can be taken by the state. To get a person’s WhatsApp conversation, the source said, the IT ministry had asked Twitter to share the entire database of 500 million users not only in India but across the globe.

The source said that WhatsApp does not have the option to export the user database, as it was not part of their API or it was not an alternative to Facebook. They had to go through the process of sending a mass request to Twitter with all the data about every user in India.

According to law enforcement agencies, the government does not have the capacity to check every social media account and view all posts made daily. In some cases, it can take up to an hour to delete a posted picture, said some members of parliament who are monitoring the issue.

None of these social media companies have data sharing agreements, so they will not be forced to share data or make data available by court order.

The Information Technology (Reasonable Time to Collect and Protect Data) Rules, 2019 mandates that all IT service providers collect and store all data they know about an individual for the purpose of investigation. However, if any such service provider fails to collect the information within the stipulated time, they will be penalized as per the rules.

Government sources said they are working on a mechanism to gain access to WhatsApp data. He further said that WhatsApp is the only service that does not cooperate with the government.

He also pointed out that WhatsApp had not interacted with Indian officials in this regard.

Many questions are being asked about the data and privacy shared with the government.

The ruling Congress party wants to know whether these services are aware of their responsibility under the law and if not, why they have not been made aware of the law. Their role is based on the fact that when other companies were investigated, they were told by the government that they had not violated the rules.

Congress leader Manish Tiwari also said that the Indian government should take steps to ensure that its citizens are not subjected to any kind of surveillance. The Indian government is also waiting for WhatsApp's response.
