Pixel 6 Pro Will Be Expensive, Pixel 6 Positioned in the Premium Segment: Google’s Rick Osterloh

Both the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro will be introduced this fall and run on the latest Android 12 software. Google's SVP for Devices and Services, Rick Osterloh says that the Pixel 6 Pro will be expensive. He added that even the Pixel 6 will be positioned in the ‘upper segment’. It is, however, not clear what ‘upper segment’ he is talking about. In any case, Osterloh explained that Google is in the business of making devices that people want to buy, and so, Google has created a more compelling value proposition for Pixel. For instance, the device will support fast charging and a better camera. He said, “Our strategy is to make devices that people want to buy and make sure we make those devices in the most cost effective manner.”

However, the Google team had some choice words about Apple. Osterloh went on to say that Apple “are a little bit different” in that it’s easy to compare their devices against other device that they don’t make, and added that the iPhone makes its users happy, and that’s a pretty cool thing. He added that if he were to compare things, “In terms of the product and what we bring to the market versus what Apple brings, it’s just a very different thing.” He also suggested that Apple “does things differently, and sometimes that’s successful.” Google did not add many details about the launch of the Pixel 6, but we will update the story if it happens.

The Pixel 6 is being touted as a flagship device that runs on Google’s latest OS, Android 10. It will also come with the Google Lens visual AI that is now present in a lot of the Pixel devices. Google Lens is able to do things like read QR codes, translate menus, find product details, and more.

As for the camera, the Pixel 6 is being touted as having a “significantly improved camera”. The device will have dual-pixel technology, which should help it to capture a wider range of light and allow for better sharpness. To improve its photography, the Pixel 6 will also come with HDR+ and Google’s ARCore. You will get 12-megapixel rear camera, and a front-facing camera that will be more like 16-megapixel. In fact, Osterloh said that the team’s goal is to make a phone with a “more similar-to-eye view, something that feels more natural, something that looks like we’re looking through your own eyes”.

If you want to know more about the new Google Pixel 6, we have a list of everything you need to know about the upcoming device, and how it compares to its predecessor.
